The New Castle County Division of Police, in an effort to continue to foster “Excellence in Policing,” will sponsor an opportunity for members of the community to become acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of the Division of Police. NCCPD’s Citizen’s Police Academy brings the police and the community closer together in a setting that offers a sample of police training to each participant.

Participants receive three (3) hours of training one (1) night each week for 8 weeks. They will learn about the many varied functions of law enforcement. Participants will experience some of the highlights of police training and will be exposed to the operations of the police division. Presentations will include the basics of criminal law, search and seizure, patrol tactics, modified firearm training, crime scene processing, and an introduction into the department’s Special Operations Unit. The Citizen’s Police Academy participants are offered an opportunity to network with Command Staff, patrol officers and training personnel. The Citizen’s Police Academy will be hosted in a safe, controlled, and entertaining training environment.

All presentations will be conducted by certified Council of Police Training (COPT) Instructors, and law enforcement professionals who teach police recruits and veteran police officers. Participants will leave this training with a greater understanding of how NCCPD provides service to the communities in which they live to make New Castle County safe. This proactive approach to policing will be critical in turning NCCPD’s stakeholders into brand advocates, and ambassadors for the agency.

This program is not an accredited certification course to become a sworn police officer.
