What is an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning?


A PATH Intl. Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ES) serves as the equine expert in equine- assisted services (EAS).

A PATH Intl. Certified Equine Specialist

  • is knowledgeable in horsemanship 
  • has a thorough understanding of the ways equine behavior affects human responses 
  • evaluates the role of the equine during the mental health or education sessions they supervise
  • understands how to collaborate with a mental health therapist and/or educator to best meet the client’s needs. 
  • has a general knowledge of mental health and education processes

A PATH Intl. Certified Equine Specialist is responsible for

  • ensuring the safety and well-being of the equine
  • assessing the equine’s response to any interactions
  • assuring that the interactions within the EAS session are ethical
  • prohibiting/stopping any activity that compromises the well-being of the equine
  • helping to keep the EAS safe

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The three-day Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning Workshop is for experienced equestrians, instructors, mental health professionals, and educators who are interested in equine-assisted services (EAS) such as equine-facilitated mental health and education programs. 

WHAT WILL BE COVERED?

This specialized training is taught by a mental health professional and an equine specialist and uses a combination of lectures, discussions, demonstrations, role-plays, and hands-on exercises with equines to

  • provide an overview of PATH Intl. standards, core values, equine-assisted services, and examples of what EAS programming may look like
  • define the role of the equine specialist
  • educate individuals on safe equine handling practices, equine body language, and equine communication
  • inform participants on EAS therapy and education teams and their roles
  • prepare individuals who are seeking the PATH Intl. ESMHL Certification

Please note:  This workshop is NOT designed to train educators or mental health professionals how to perform their professional roles in an EAS setting. 

Workshop Dates: March 31 – April 2, 2023 from 8:00am to 5:30pm

Skills Test Date:  April 3, 2023 (time to be assigned)
