The New Castle County Evidence Detection Unit is composed of five crime scene detectives, one supervisor and three retired officers who are employed as civilians. The unit's duty is to process crime scenes as assigned. These scenes include burglaries, robberies, death investigations, assaults, sexual assaults, homicides, and other incidents as deemed by supervision. During the processing of a crime scene, the investigating evidence detection officer documents the scene with video, photography, and crime scene sketches. They are responsible for locating, processing, and analyzing physical evidence obtained at a crime scene. The evidence detection officer processes items of evidence for latent prints and trace evidence both at the scene and in a controlled environment.
