Board Responsibilities

The Pension Board reviews all ordinances that propose amending the pension related sections in Chapter 26 of the county code and makes recommendations to County Council and the County Executive. The board may, from time to time and in its sole discretion, provide pre-retirement education and counseling to county employees, and may pay for the cost of such programs from the pension fund established in Section 26.04.601.

Membership Requirements

  • The chief human resources officer ex officio
  • The chief financial officer ex officio
  • The county executive shall appoint six members according to the following system:
    • Local 459 of the American Federation of State, county and municipal employees, AFL-CIO, shall submit three names of employees of the county for at least five years and members of the program
    • Local 1607 of the American Federation of State, county and municipal employees, AFL-CIO, shall submit three names of employees of the County for at least five years and members of the program
    • Local 3109 of the American Federation of State, county and municipal employees, AFL-CIO, shall submit three names of employees of the county for at least five years and members of the program
    • The Fraternal Order of Police shall submit three names of employees of the county for at least three years and members of the program
    • Local 3911 of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) shall submit three names of employees of the county for at least five years and members of the program
    • The Pension Plan Administrator shall submit a list of non-union system employees who are members of the program and who have been employees of the County for at least five (5) years.

County Council shall appoint four members, none of whom shall be an official or employee of the county according to the following system:

  • Two of the members appointed to the Board of Trustees shall be in the banking or investment security business
  • One of the members appointed to the Board of Trustees shall be a retired member of the program
  • Of those members appointed by County Council, one (1) shall be Chairperson. If none of the members appointed by Council is designated by the Council as Chairperson at the time of appointment, the Chairperson shall be chosen by the Council appointees and shall serve as Chairperson until the Council designates a Chairperson
