[ARCHIVED] Late Wilmington Councilman Antonio Resto honored by County Executive

New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon has issued a tribute to the late Wilmington Councilman Antonio Resto, who died last week.

County Executive Gordon’s Oct. 11, 2013 tribute honors the late Councilman Resto for being the first Hispanic elected to Wilmington City Council in 1973. The Honorable Tony Resto won the Fifth District, the city’s traditional Hispanic enclave.

“Councilman Resto was the pioneer that paved the way for my friends, former Councilman Demetrio Ortega Jr., who held the Fifth District seat from 1993 to 2005, and current Fifth District Councilman Sammy Prado,” Mr. Gordon said.

“Tony also served the State of Delaware as a constable for Justice of the Peace Court, and he was instrumental in helping the Latin American Community Center in Wilmington open,” he added. “New Castle County joins the City of Wilmington in mourning this public servant.”

Among the other councilmen who held the Fifth District seat since Resto’s historic election were the Honorable Freddy Rios and the late, Honorable Jesus M. Prado, Sammy Prado’s father. In addition, Councilwoman Maria Cabrera was the first Hispanic elected to an at large seat in 2012.


Ejecutivo del Condado Tom Gordon honra a el ex Consejal Antonio Resto

El Ejecutivo del Condado Tom Gordon ha escrito un tributo para el difunto Consejal de Wilmington Antonio Resto, quien se murió la semana pasada.

El tributo de la 11 de octubre, 2013, honra a Resto, quien fue el primer representante del Quinto Distrito de la ciudad de Wilmington. El se ganó elección en 1973 en la sección de Wilmington que ha sido tradicionalmente el pueblo de los hispanos.

“El Consejal Resto fue el pionero quien ayudo otros politicos hispanos como mis amigos, el Consejal Demetrio Ortega Jr., quien tuvo la silla del Distrito Quinto desde 1993 a 2005, y el Consejal hoy dia Samuel Prado,” dijo el Señor Gordon.

“Tony tambien sirvio el Estado de Delaware como un alguacil por la Justicia de la Paz, y era instrumental con la formacion del Centro Latinoamerica de la Comunidad,” el dijo. El Condado de New Castle County y la Ciudad de Wilmington estan tristes con el muerto del Señor Resto.”

Entre los otros consejales quien fueron elegido en el Distrito Quinto desde la eleccion historica de Resto eran el Honorable Freddy Rios y el difunto Honorable Jesus M. Prado, el padre de Samuel Prado. Tambien, la Consejal Maria Cabrera fue la primera hispana elegida por toda la ciudad, no solamente por un distrito.
