February 11, 2016—New Castle County Register of Wills Ciro Poppiti announced a major policy initiative Thursday: The creation of a think tank focused on seniors and their caregivers.
The think tank will address a number of issues related to the county’s aging population, including best practices on “aging in place;” employment for those seniors trying to re-enter the labor market; and estate planning / wills, especially within the Hispanic community.
Poppiti also declared 2016 as the “Year of the Senior Citizen." Ernest J. “Ernie” Camoirano, Jr., a well-known civic and community activist, accepted the proclamation on behalf of senior citizens throughout the County. He was presented the proclamation by County Councilman John Cartier.
“Seniors are our greatest resource of knowledge, wisdom, talent, and experience,” said Poppiti.
In announcing the creation of the think tank, Poppiti introduced the team of volunteer policy fellows and their projects: Laura Kaplan, Esquire (Senior Citizens Bill of Rights); Mihir Patel, Esquire (best practices on “aging in place”); Givvel Marrero (educating the public on the need for estate planning); Derrick Fuller and Arisa Howze (employment for those seniors trying to re-enter the labor market).
The think tank will be tasked with delivering a meaningful Senior Citizens Bill of Rights to the County. As all the policy fellows are volunteers, the think tank will incur no cost to the County.
