Celebration at Newark Free Library marks new kids’ magazine

A new children’s magazine will be released Saturday, February 27, at a celebration at the Newark Free Library.

The 2:30-4 p.m. event at the county library branch at 750 Library Ave. is free and open to the public with stories, music, crafts and refreshments.

Ninety children ages 4 through 10 participated in the project to create the PAGES Children’s Literary and Arts Magazine, sponsored by Newark Free Library through the county’s Department of Community Services. The one-time magazine features stories, poems, jokes, essays and artwork by 49 children, each of whom will be presented a copy. Others may read copies of PAGES that will be kept in the library collection.

The magazine was made possible by a grant from the New York City-based Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, which has a mission of bringing its namesake author-illustrator’s multicultural and creative spirit into children’s lives and literature.

Saturday’s event also will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birthday of the late Keats, considered a trailblazer after the broad success of his 1962 book, “The Snowy Day,” featuring all African-American characters.
