Some of Delaware’s youngest authors, just 5 to 13 years old, on Monday will autograph their first books at a gala event with a real red carpet and book giveaway just for children, hosted by New Castle County.
“We’re very proud of our Young Writers Workshop and its tremendous success,” County Executive Thomas P. Gordon said, adding, “Monday’s gala will celebrate these budding authors as well as the books they created and everyone involved in this new program.”
The 6:30 p.m. event Monday, July 18, is free and open to the public at Bear Library in Governor’s Square Shopping Center at Del. 7 and U.S. 40. Those planning to attend must RSVP to Sheila Carlisle at (302) 395-5613 or [email protected]
More than 450 children’s books will be given free, one per child, on a first-come, first-served basis, said Sophia Hanson, general manager of the county Department of Community Services. Monday’s “Young Writers Workshop Book Tour” event will feature a red carpet with “paparazzi,” VIP room for the young stars, “candy bar” of treats and photo booth with the Young Writers Workshop logo.
Books include “The Photobomb Time Machine,” with time-travelers “photo-bombing” well-known scenes, and “The Story of Doctor Velma,” about Velma Scantlebury of Christiana Health Care System, the nation’s first female African-American transplant surgeon. Others’ subjects range from water, a dragon and magic pen to a friendly turtle, third-graders learning about favorite zoo animals and “How to Get a Cat to Like a Dog.”
Ninety-one kids joined the eight-week program funded by M&T Bank at Bear, Newark and Claymont libraries; Hockessin, Delaware City and Garfield Park Police Athletic League Centers; Absalom Jones Community Center and Rose Hill Boys & Girls Club.
