Summer camp children stung by wasps during trip to Rockwood Park & Museum

A dozen children were stung by wasps during a picnic trip of about 200 New Castle County summer camp children to Rockwood Park & Museum Wednesday morning.

Camp counselors immediately called 911 and New Castle County Police, paramedics and local fire companies responded. Three children were transported to nearby Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children while another nine were treated on site for stings by county paramedics.

County Executive Thomas P. Gordon personally went to Rockwood to check on the status of the children.

“It’s a shame that children on a fun trip outdoors had to have this misfortune bestowed upon them,” Gordon said. “I am happy to hear everyone is doing better.”

Parents picked up their children, including the three who were treated and released by A.I. duPont Children's Hospital.

Also at Rockwood were Chief of Staff Samuel L. Guy, Esq., Chief of Emergency Medical Services Lawrence Tan, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Dave Carpenter and staff from the departments of Community Services and Special Services.

Special Services staff cleared off the area with caution tape and have minded the nest, waiting for the exterminator’s arrival.

“We plan to get the children ice cream on Friday,” Gordon said. “That’s a better way to celebrate the end of summer.”
