[ARCHIVED] Rain delays Sleep Under the Stars at Carousel Park

Due to heavy rain with more expected, New Castle County has postponed this Saturday’s Sleep Under the Stars family campout at Carousel Park & Equestrian Center in Pike Creek.

The free event will be held on its rain date of Saturday, Oct. 15.

The delay was announced Thursday after review of National Weather Service forecasts showed more rain expected with potentially dangerous thunderstorms and examination of the park grounds found them too wet for the Department of Special Services to set up of tents and make other preparations, Chief Administrative Officer Timothy Mullaney Sr. said.

Families registered for the original date will be registered automatically for Oct. 15, including reservations to borrow tents.

Registration, requested but not required, continues at www.nccde.org/845/Fall-Sleep-Under-The-Stars by clicking the orange Eventbrite logo, then the next page’s green “REGISTER” bar. A camp area is designated but optional for military families and veterans’ families. Some tents are available to borrow -- first-come, first-served -- by calling Suzy Casey at (302) 395-5652.

Camper check-in for the superhero-themed event starts at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 with activities beginning at noon.

Activities include superhero training camp, superhero costume contest, superhero movie, superhero tent decorating contest, superhero dance with DJ, superhero cape-making, superhero characters posing for bring-your-own-camera pictures, 8 p.m. showing of the superhero movie “The Incredibles” and tent-to-tent trick-or-treating with camping families urged to bring candy or other treats to give the costumed children.

For a full schedule of entertainment and other activities – including hay rides, bonfires, food trucks, vendors, the Carousel Kids Corral of friendly animals and demonstrations by New Castle County Police Mounted Patrol and K-9 Units – visit www.nccde.org/845/Fall-Sleep-Under-The-Stars. The site also lists rules including grill restrictions and the park’s no-smoking rule for safety.
