[ARCHIVED] County Executive’s busy Christmas holiday activities continue through this weekend

County Executive Tom Gordon has had a busy week of holiday activities that started with the Christmas tree lightings at the City/County Building Monday, the New Castle County Building Tuesday and Glasgow Park Thursday.

County Executive Gordon will continue with the festivities at the holiday open house Friday evening with the Christmas Tree Lighting at Rockwood Mansion, the Claymont Christmas Parade on Saturday and the Elsmere Christmas Parade on Sunday.

“It’s the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year,” County Executive Gordon said. “People love the Christmas tree lightings, as evidenced by the 550 people who attended Glasgow’s event. Of those people, 300 were children who had a chance to visit with Santa.

“I want to thank Community Services General Manager Alan Matas and Acting Special Services Wayne Merritt for the hard work their staff did to prepare County facilities for such wonderful events,” he added. “County employees have made this a great, productive year.”

The County Executive is especially looking forward to seeing Rockwood Mansion illuminated for the holiday season.

“People know how I feel about this gem, but wait until you see Rockwood this weekend,” he said. “This is arguably the time of year when Rockwood really shines for the residents of New Castle County.”

After the Rockwood Christmas tree is lit, the County Executive will read ‘Twas the Night before Christmas to children at 7 p.m. Friday. The County Executive is tentatively scheduled to return to Rockwood to read to children again at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Continuing on with the weekend’s festivities, the Executive will march in the Claymont Christmas Parade scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday on Philadelphia Pike, starting at Maple Lane.

He is also scheduled to march in the Elsmere Christmas Parade scheduled for 2.p.m. Sunday, weather permitting. The parade starts at DuPont and New Roads and proceeds to Kirkwood Highway, with the reviewing stand at the Elsmere Fire Co. The rain date is Dec. 15.
