[ARCHIVED] County urges support for Thanksgiving Dinner drive

New Castle County is encouraging residents to support AFSCME Local Union 459’s Needy Family Fund by donating food at county libraries and offices for its annual Thanksgiving Dinner Drive.
“We are proud to support Local 459’s generous effort and thank the employees and retirees who make this happen every year to help struggling families,” County Executive Thomas P. Gordon said. “Even small donations make a big difference to a hungry family and so many people pitch in every year – donating food or collecting and sorting donations, packing and delivering families’ packages -- to help brighten their holidays, especially for the children’s health and happiness.”
Food packages will be delivered Nov. 22 to 75 needy families, Local 459 President John Spence said.
“Please help us help others in solidarity,” he said. All kinds of food are welcomed as donations, including those that may not fit the holiday but will feed families later, Spence said, adding, “Peanut butter, tuna fish, baby food, it will all help.”
Donation sites:
? New Castle County Government Center, 87 Read’s Way near New Castle
? Conner Building, 187A Old Churchmans Road near New Castle
? Appoquinimink Community Library, 651 N. Broad St., Middletown

Donations also will be welcomed after Thanksgiving, as drop-off containers stay at the same sites for Local Union 459 Needy Family Fund’s Holiday Food Drive with deliveries in late December.
