New Castle, DE – New Castle County reminds residents that it will hold its Summer Youth Employment Processing Event tomorrow, Saturday, March 18, at the Garfield Park Community Recreation Center for youth ages 14-20 who are interested in participation in the County’s Summer Youth Employment Program. New Castle County leverages state and county funding to provide paid summer employment opportunities throughout county government and in local partnering non-profit service providers. Hiring preference is given to youth from low-income families.
The 2017 Summer Youth Employment Program will run from June 19 through August 25. In 2016, the County’s Summer Youth Employment Program hired 141 youth who were assigned to 39 worksites across New Castle County, including in the City of Wilmington.
“In today’s competitive economy, young people need meaningful work opportunities, recognizing their potential for career success,” said County Executive Matthew Meyer. “The Summer Youth Employment Program provides practical experience to low-income students, engaging them in our communities all summer long.”
Program information and application materials are available online at http://www.nccde.org/syep. All interested youth must bring completed application materials to Saturday’s Processing Event, to be held from 9 am to 3 pm at the Garfield Park Community Recreation Center/New Castle PAL, located at 26 Karyln Drive New Castle, DE 19720. Applicants should be prepared to take part in a brief interview on-site.
Studies demonstrate that summer youth employment programs improve school attendance, keep participants safe through engagement in meaningful summer activities and reduce interactions with the criminal justice system.
