New Castle County to announce new steps to tackle neighborhood blight

County Executive to sign vacant property ordinance and be joined by legislators and advocates to unveil new agenda to strengthen communities

On Tuesday, May 16, County Executive Matthew Meyer will be joined by county and state legislators, housing advocates, civic leaders and public safety officials as he signs an ordinance into law that enhances County government’s authority to tackle vacant and abandoned housing and blight. This legislation establishes new authority to improve neighborhoods by enforcing compliance with the County’s vacant housing registry while reducing the cost to taxpayers for monitoring and maintaining vacant properties. During the event a broader vacant property strategy will also be unveiled, including a state legislative package aimed at strengthening community development, reducing crime and supporting home ownership.

Tuesday’s event will take place at a new home under construction at the site of a formerly vacant and blighted house. The home is being built by Interfaith Community Housing of Delaware with federal funds it received through New Castle County.
