April 8 public meeting will update residents on new Middletown Library, welcome design feedback

Middletown, DE – On Monday, April 8 from 6 – 8 pm New Castle County will host a public meeting in Middletown to update the community on plans to build a new County Library downtown to serve the MOT area and to gather input about interior amenities, programming space and architectural features as the design phase gets underway. The meeting will take place at the Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown, located at 27 West Green Street in Middletown.

“Our new library in Middletown will better meet the needs of the MOT area with additional gathering and programming spaces that employ technology to promote literacy, learning and collaboration,” County Executive Meyer said.  “We need to hear from you. Please join us on April 8 and share your ideas as we begin to design this new community resource to serve you.”

Last October, County Executive Matt Meyer announced that a new state-of-the-art library will be constructed in downtown Middletown to improve services to area residents. The new library meets the county’s pledge to increase services in Southern New Castle County and will be more than twice the size of the Appoquinimink Library which has outgrown its temporary home in rented office space.

Earlier this year the County completed the land acquisition of the library site at the corner of Route 299 and S. Catherine Street and last month the architectural firm that will design the new facility was selected. Monday’s public meeting is the first opportunity for area residents to provide their input to those architects as they begin their work.

Design, construction and furnishings for the new library will be funded through a combination of County, State, and private funds. Library construction costs will be split by the state and county governments, which have each already contributed $5 million in capital funding. Additional capital funding has been included by County Executive Meyer in his proposed Fiscal Year 2020 county budget which he unveiled to members of County Council and the public last week.
