New Castle, DE – New Castle County’s Carousel Park farmers market opens for the season on Friday, May 3, connecting area residents with expanded opportunities to purchase fresh local produce, meats, honey, plants and flowers, along with prepared foods from food trucks and restaurants and handmade goods by local artisans and entrepreneurs. New Castle County farmers markets support sustainable agriculture and local entrepreneurship, promote healthy lifestyles and engage residents with County parks and facilities. Four additional farmers market sites at Route 9, Westside, Rockwood Park and Glasgow Park open the first week of June.
“Buy local as you are able. It’s best to eat from farm to table,” County Executive Matt Meyer said.
The Carousel Park farmers market, located at the main entrance parking area at 3700 Limestone Road, offers seasonal produce, meat, honey, eggs, potted herbs, and flowers from area farmers and purveyors of bread, pastries, canned goods and prepared foods. It also features local artisans who make soaps, jewelry, dog treats, home décor and more. Last year the Carousel Park farmers market welcomed a record 19,000 shoppers.
Each of the five County farmers markets operate one day each week through early October and admission is always free. Each location also offers a variety of educational programming on wellness, the arts, and family activities, and more through partnerships with community organizations. Some markets also present live music and entertainment throughout the season. Check the farmers market event schedules at www.newcastlede.gov/farmersmarkets.
Last year, New Castle County farmers markets together attracted a record 41,000 patrons and generated $363,000 in sales for local businesses. All five locations partner with the WIC Farmers Market Voucher Program and accept SNAP/EBT card payments. Additionally, from mid-June through mid-August, weather permitting, the Glasgow Park location will participate in the Summer Food Service Program in collaboration with the Delaware Department of Education and USDA, serving meals to children age 18 and under with no cost or enrollment.
