New Castle, DE – This week New Castle County launched its inaugural Clean Stream Champion photo scavenger hunt, offering prizes to county residents who post eco-friendly photos related to water quality on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #CleanStreamChampion and mentioning @nccde.

“Take a photo that shows your community protecting the environment and post it on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #CleanStreamChampion. Simple actions can keep our streams and waterways clean,” said County Executive Matt Meyer. “GreeNCC is partnering with our friends at Delaware Nature Society to enlist every resident to be a Clean Stream Champion.”

Every county resident can participate by submitting a picture of any of these simple eco-friendly things you can do to help keep New Castle County waterways clean:

  • A pet waste collection station from a park or other public location
  • The written instructions on a bag of chemical-free fertilizer
  • A litter-free storm drain along a New Castle County roadway or parking lot
  • An environmentally-friendly household cleaning product
  • A can or jar containing used cooking grease

The first one thousand residents to post a photo on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #CleanStreamChampion and mentioning @nccde will receive a specially-designed postcard embedded with native wildflower seeds that can be planted in a flowerbed or garden.

Participants can also submit their photos using the online form at https://cleanstreamchampion.pgtb.me/nHGQG8

“Delaware Nature Society is excited to partner with New Castle County on their efforts to improve local water quality. Clean water starts at home – small actions such as reducing lawn chemicals or scooping pet waste reduce pollution in our waterways. What’s good for water is also good for our health, our pets, and for wildlife,” said Anne Harper, Executive Director, Delaware Nature Society.

All participants will be entered into a random drawing to receive one of the following prizes (note: New Castle County and Delaware Nature Society employees and their families are not eligible to receive contest prizes):

  • A complete two-person kayak package (one winner)
  • JBL waterproof bluetooth speakers (two winners)
  • An environmentally-friendly household cleaning product package (eight winners)

#CleanStreamChampion follows the close of New Castle County’s Great Schools, Clean Streams pledge drive which secured a record 16,400 pledges from county residents to properly dispose of their used cooking fats, oil, and grease by keeping it out of household plumbing and the county sewer system.
