County Exec Meyer announces $4.25m grant program to bridge distance learning gap

New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer announces $4.25m grant program to assist County school districts’ students bridge distance learning gap

New Castle, DE – Today, New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer, joined by Red Clay School District Superintendent Dorrell Green and EastSide Charter School Aaron Bass, and former Red Clay Schoolboard member and current New Castle County Council member Ken Woods (1st District), announced a $4.25 million distance learning grant program funded by the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act today. These funds will be available to New Castle County public schools who will assess students’ distance learning needs for the coming school year.

This grant program is in direct response to the County Executive’s meetings with school district superintendents over the past months. The grant program is designed to support district and charter schools who seek to improve and increase distance learning opportunities for all public school students in New Castle County. Possible use of these funds could be to further educate teachers on distance teaching skills, to purchase hardware, software, or PPE, and other expenses.

“COVID-19 has exposed inequities in our communities across the board – healthcare, housing, hunger, and especially education,” said County Executive Meyer. “This grant will provide resources to school districts who will in turn get much needed hardware and software into the hands of teachers and students who need it.”

School Principals who are seeking solutions for distance learning for the coming school year may apply for grants starting Thursday, August 27 2020. Visit caresact.nccde.org for more information.
