County Executive Meyer announces partnership with DonorsChoose to benefit DE teachers

New Castle, DE – New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer has announced a partnership with DonorsChoose to help fund COVID-19 related Delaware public school teachers’ funding requests, up to $1,000 per teacher. New Castle County has set aside $500,000 of federal CARES Act dollars to fund these requests. This is the first time a government has partnered with DonorsChoose. Teachers can click here to apply.

"Teachers are on the front lines of this crisis," said County Executive Meyer. "So many are innovating to educate in new ways and deserve our full support. We encourage all Delaware public school teachers to apply by next Tuesday the 24th."

Teachers can apply for up to $1,000 to adapt their classrooms and address learning challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding can go towards anything that helps students during the coronavirus pandemic: books and hands-on materials for moments they’re learning from home, flexible seating and extra individual supplies to keep their distance in the classroom, or anything that teachers need to teach remotely or in person.

“In this ever-changing learning environment, our educators face new challenges every day,” said DSEA President Stephanie Ingram. “This funding would allow educators to purchase the supplies they need to keep their students learning while keeping them safe in any environment”. “I’d like to thank New Castle County and DonorsChoose for stepping up to support our educators when they need it most.”

“Given that Delaware’s teachers are facing unprecedented challenges right now, I was excited, but not surprised, to get a call from the County Executive asking how he could help,” said Rodel Foundation’s Paul Herdman. “As a former classroom teacher in a high needs school, he understands the issues. Donor’s Choose came to mind immediately for our team because they are an efficient and transparent way to get teachers the help they need.”

The program aims to help hundreds of teachers offset additional expenses caused by the coronavirus.
