[ARCHIVED] County Executive Meyer signs anti-Semitism pledge

New Castle County Executive Matt Mayer has signed on to American Jewish Committee (AJC) Mayors United Against Antisemitism statement.

The Mayors United Against Antisemitism statement affirms a core set of principles, including the condemnation of anti-Jewish hatred in all forms; rejection of the notion that anti-Semitic acts may ever be justified by one’s view on the actions or existence of the State of Israel; declaration that antisemitism and any prejudices due to religious differences are inconsistent with core American values; and the belief that the promotion of mutual understanding and respect among all citizens is essential to good governance and democratic life.

“On this annual Yom HaShoah, this annual community day of remembrance, we paused to sign on to the pledge, to say hate of any group is not tolerated in our community,” said County Executive Meyer. “We will continue to recognize the brutal murder of six million Jewish people, killed because of their religion and heritage. We will continue to work for a county that is inclusive and celebrates the beauty of our diversity.” Meyer continued, “I want to thank the Jewish Federation of Delaware and the Jewish Community Resources Council for their leadership in eradicating anti-Semitism from our county, our state and our country.”

The statement pledges a commitment to working within and across U.S. communities to advance the values of respectful coexistence and calls on mayors and municipal leaders to add their names and to affirm that antisemitism is incompatible with fundamental democratic values.

Other Delawareans who have signed the pledge include Mayor Robin R. Christiansen (Dover), Mayor Jerry Clifton (Newark), Mayor John Reddington (Ocean View) Mayor Stan Mills (Rehoboth Beach), Mayor Kathy Lock (Slaughter Beach), Mayor Michael S. Purzycki (Wilmington).
