[ARCHIVED] NCCPD Arrest Burglar in Cooper Farms

New Castle County Police have arrested Edward Mattingly, a 39-year-old homeless man and have charged with burglary and other related offenses related to an incident in Cooper Farms.

At approximately 9:25 a.m.Monday, May 5, New Castle County Police responded to a home in the 2500 block of Duncan Road for a burglary alarm. Officers arrived on scene and made contact with the homeowner. The initial investigation revealed and unknown suspect had entered the victim’s residence and removed a container of coins.

Detectives from the New Castle County Special Investigations Squad (SIS) were in the area and located Mattingly at the intersection of Duncan Road and Dartmouth Road on a bicycle. Contact was made with Mattingly who was carrying two duffle bags. Inside one of the duffle bags was a hammer, a bag of coins and a watch. Officers took Mattingly into custody without incident and transported him to the New Castle County Police Headquarters.

Detectives from the New Castle County Criminal Investigations Unit have been investigating a number of burglaries to homes in the Cooper Farms area. Evidence collected from the burglaries linked Mattingly to the burglaries in the neighborhood. In one case, the victim reported the suspect ate a can of tuna fish and in another case; a victim’s home was burglarized twice.

Mattingly has been charged with burglaries to the following residences:
• 200 block of Milltown Road,
• (4 homes) in the 2500 block of Duncan Road.

Edward Mattingly has been charged with burglary in the second degree (6 counts), possession of burglar tools, attempted theft under $1500, theft under $1500 (2 counts) and criminal mischief (5 counts).

He was arraigned and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of posting $37,500 cash bail and issued a no contact order.
