The Brandywine Hundred Library (BHL) will be temporarily closed from Thursday, Feb. 1 to Monday, May 6. New Castle County will be replacing the building’s heating and cooling system (HVAC) and roof.
BHL’s current HVAC system, which is over two decades old, is no longer capable of providing adequate heating and cooling. The new system is more energy-efficient and will improve airflow throughout the building. Simultaneously, ductwork will be cleaned and removed where necessary to ensure healthier air quality. The project will also encompass roof replacement; areas that have experienced damage from ongoing leaks will be repaired and repainted.
The closure of BHL is required for the safety of patrons and staff while the HVAC system is installed because of the lack of temperature and air-filtration controls during the project.
“The Brandywine Hundred Library is a cornerstone of the community,” stated Diana Brown, Manager of Libraries. “While a temporary closure is necessary for these essential upgrades, we are making every effort to minimize disruption for our patrons. We appreciate the community's understanding and support as we work towards creating an even better library experience for everyone."
During this period, patrons are encouraged to utilize the extended hours of operation at the nearby Claymont and Woodlawn Libraries.
Claymont Library Hours of Operation:
Mon. - Thurs: 10 am to 9 pm
Fri. & Sat.: 10 am to 5 pm

Alternatively, patrons can use their online account or contact a local library to arrange pickup at another public library. BHL’s book drop will be closed, but checked-out materials can be returned to any public library in the state.
Brandywine Hundred Library staff will continue to order new materials, which will be available at other libraries until the building reopens. Wi-Fi will remain accessible in the library’s parking lot for patrons in need of internet access.
