The New Castle County Police are currently sponsoring an all-female Youth Empowerment Camp held at the Lieutenant Joseph L. Szczerba Police Academy in Newark.
The Youth Empowerment Camp is a New Castle County Police operated program funded by a grant from the Delaware Criminal Justice Council.
The camp began on Monday (6/23) with a total of 14 girls ranging in age from 12 through 16. The girls were provided a uniform which consists of a pink T-shirt and black shorts. They are encouraged to wear the uniform to promote pride and identity in the program. The purpose of this program is to empower young girls and influence them into making good decisions, avoiding risky behavior, elevating their self-esteem, and strengthening their self-confidence.
The girls will have lectures from women in various professions and backgrounds throughout the nine-day camp. They are scheduled to visit such places as the William Penn Bistro, Carousel Park and the New Castle County Courthouse. The topics include finances, CPR, ethics, gang awareness and alcohol abuse.
The girls will also have opportunities for team building exercises and attend a presentation on the Heroin Alert Program by Marie Allen.
