County Executive Thomas P. Gordon supports same-sex marriage and respectfully urges the Delaware General Assembly to enact necessary legislation. “This is an issue of equal protection under the law and it is long overdue,” said County Executive Gordon. “The time for progress is now.”
County Executive Gordon and Chief Administrative Officer David Grimaldi have directed the Law Department to review New Castle County laws and regulations to ensure that same-sex couples are not victimized by New Castle County through governmental discrimination and civil rights violations.
Equality is a fundamental principle in our nation and is reflected in the U.S. Constitution through the Equal Protection Clause. States exceed their authority when marriage is defined as only between a man and a woman. Federal efforts designed to limit application of the term marriage to a man and a woman is similarly contrary to notions of equality. The obligations and rights of marriage are to be promoted not discouraged.
