New Castle County Executive Thomas P. Gordon called for a lean, 0.24 percent increase in the 2016 fiscal year operating budget during his Budget Address to County Council Tuesday night.
The budget includes the Executive's proposal to actually shrink government with a 0.10 percent reduction in spending for the general fund, which at $174 million comprises the bulk of the $256 million.
"It is important to note that this is one of only five times in County history that the operating budget has contracted over the previous year," County Executive Gordon said.
Increases in the sewer and light tax funds caused the overall increase of 0.24 percent.
The Executive also recommended a FY2016 Capital Budget of $56.6 million, down $1.8 million from the approved FY2015 Capital Budget.
"This Capital Budget will continue to fund improvements to our Sewer System, Parks, Public Safety and Community Services programs, most notable, the Rt. 9 innovation center," he said.
