New Castle County Executive Thomas P. Gordon called for a lean, 0.24 percent increase in the 2016 fiscal year operating budget, and he again called for no tax increases during his Budget Address to County Council Tuesday night.
“This is my 11th budget address before County Council,” County Executive Gordon said. “This is also the 11th time that I have stood before this body without requesting a tax increase.”
The budget includes the Executive's proposal to actually shrink government with a 0.10 percent reduction in spending for the general fund, which at $174 million comprises the bulk of the $256 million total budget.
"It is important to note that this is one of only five times in County history that the operating budget has contracted over the previous year," County Executive Gordon said.
Increases in the sewer and light tax funds of 0.86 percent and 3.77 percent, respectively, caused the overall increase of 0.24 percent.
