[ARCHIVED] Acclaimed Author Walter Mosley to Come to the Wilmington Riverfront April 16

WILMINGTON, Del. – County Executive Tom Gordon and Community Services General Manager Sophia Hanson are pleased to announce that acclaimed author Walter Mosley will be coming to Wilmington to present an author talk and book-signing as part of the New Castle County Reads program.

Mr. Mosley is scheduled to speak at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 2015 at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington. The event is free and open to the public.

New Castle County Reads is an annual program conducted by New Castle County Libraries, with the goal to heighten awareness of and use of New Castle County Libraries by providing a series of programs and book discussions focusing on the program’s featured title. This year, the New Castle County Reads featured title is Mosley’s The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey.

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey tells the story of a 91 year-old African American man entering the early stages of dementia and living alone in an area punctuated by gun violence. Mr. Grey’s life changes after he meets Robyn, a 17 year-old girl without a family of her own. Robyn cares for Ptolemy and introduces him to a local doctor, who invites him to join an experimental drug study that will help bring back his memory, but will also shorten his life span. Ptolemy must decide what to do.

Related programs held at libraries throughout the County will focus on themes highlighted in the story, including dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as gun violence in our communities and the toll it takes on our urban youth.

Walter Mosley has written over 40 books, with the Easy Rawlins detective series being the most well-known. His works include literary fiction, science fiction, non-fiction, plays, and a young adult novel. He has won an O. Henry award and a PEN America’s Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as a Grammy.

Mr. Mosley’s books will be available for purchase by Ninth Street Book Shop at the event, and the book-signing will follow the author talk.
