[ARCHIVED] New Castle County Residents Urged to Take Precautions in Extreme Heat

Local, state and national authorities are reminding everyone that extreme heat is the No. 1 cause of weather related deaths in America as we enter day two of an impressive, weeklong heat wave.

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

It is important for everyone to take the heat wave seriously in order to avoid unnecessary tragedy, particularly with our youth and the elderly. Rest from strenuous work frequently or, even better, reschedule strenuous activity to early morning or evening. And never leave children or pets in the car.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency - call 911.
