[ARCHIVED] City children enjoy visit to New Castle County Carousel Park

About 120 children from the William “Hicks” Anderson Center enjoyed a New Castle County Police mounted patrol demonstration, hayrides and the overall, picturesque beauty of Carousel Park Wednesday afternoon.

New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon directed the NCC Department of Community Services to host the group of Wilmington children for a field trip as a means of giving them an escape from the urban landscape of the inner city for a day.

Gordon made a trip out to Carousel to observe the 120 children from the William “Hicks” Anderson Center – part of Wilmington’s Department of Parks & Recreation – enjoying the amenities at Carousel Park on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. With Gordon were New Castle County Councilmen Timothy Sheldon (D-Pike Creek) and Joseph Reda (D-Elsmere).

“Some of the kids that visited today said this was the first time they had ever seen a horse,” Gordon said. “That’s amazing. But that’s why we want them coming out to our county parks. This is not just a onetime event, either. We hope to see more children coming to visit county parks.

“This is an example of New Castle County and the City of Wilmington working together,” he added.

Children from both the Hicks Anderson Center and the summer camp at Carousel were treated to a demonstration of the New Castle County Police mounted patrol led by New Castle County Police Chief Col. Elmer Setting. They also went on hayrides and observed the swans, ducks and turtles in the ponds of Carousel Park.

Gordon thanked General Services General Manager Alan Matas and his staff, including Regina Marini and Danette Brock, for organizing the event.

Gordon planned on returning to Carousel at 12:30 p.m. Thursday for a second group of children visiting from the Boys & Girls Club in Wilmington.
