New Castle, Del. -- New Castle County Executive Thomas P. Gordon, Mayor of Wilmington Dennis Williams and Mayor of Newark Polly Sierer are pleased to announce a plan to end veteran’s homelessness in New Castle County by December 31, 2015.
The Plan was developed as a result of the Summit to End Veterans Homelessness on May 19, 2015.
Over 80 people attended the Summit to End Veterans Homelessness including local leading authorities on veterans’ homelessness and services, landlords, housing management companies, and local City and State Department employees. The participants actively engaged in working groups as part of the Summit and helped develop the following strategies designed to end homelessness among veterans in New Castle County by the end of 2015.
The Plan aligns with the “Five Steps to End Veteran Homelessness” identified by the National Alliance to End Homelessness.
The Plan will:
1. Identify all homeless veterans in New Castle County and create a master list to be shared among homeless networks.
2. Identify all available housing stock, including existing and potential stock.
3. Set a clear numerical goal and timeline for getting veterans housed and regularly track progress.
4. Identify the needed supportive services and resources for veterans.
5. House the veterans!
In addition, DelawareHousingSearch.org has joined the challenge to end veteran homelessness in Delaware. Property owners can help by promoting listings to veterans.
