[ARCHIVED] Glasgow Bark Park for dogs draws a crowd

New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon and New Castle County Councilman David Tackett held a grand opening for the new Bark Park at Glasgow Park Friday before a crowd of 100 park patrons, county employees and honorable guests Friday afternoon.

The Bark Park ribbon cutting ceremony led by County Executive Gordon and Councilman Tackett culminated about three months of work conducted by the New Castle County Department of Special Services.

“There’s probably no greater example of the cohesiveness and quality of life in Glasgow than this park,” Gordon said. “We’re all very proud of that. You're going to see other great things here as we work hard with Councilman David Tackett . You’ll also see the Farmers Market here grow with Councilman Bill Powers (a farmer).”

The County’s first dog park was in Carousel Park, he said. The County had since added locations to Iron Hill, Talley Day and now Glasgow – home to 100,000 people.

Councilman Tackett credited County Executive Tom Gordon for having the vision to build Glasgow Park to serve this high growth area of New Castle County back in 2000. When Gordon returned to office, he asked Tackett what was needed, and Tackett told him a Bark Park was at the top of the list.

“You can see today with the amount of people that were here that it was overdue,” he said. “I thank everyone for coming out. This is your park.”

NCC Special Services Acting GM Wayne Merritt said the Glasgow Bark was composed of 23,875 square feet for the large dog site and 11,100 square feet for the small dog site. NCC drafting technician Marc Klinefelter designed the park and coordinated the vendors hired for construction.
