[ARCHIVED] Rockwood Museum’s 1920s Fashion Show and Tea sells out

WILMINGTON, Del. – County Executive Tom Gordon is pleased to announce that the 1920s Fashion Show and Tea at New Castle County’s Rockwood Museum this weekend has sold out. The show offers a rare opportunity to view some of the exceptional clothing in the Museum’s collection, circa 1920.

During Sunday’s fashion show and tea, approximately 30 outfits will be modeled by Rockwood Museum volunteers and staff.

“The weather on Sunday promises to be beautiful, and I hope the attendees will come early to enjoy the grounds at Rockwood, one of the most beautiful properties in New Castle County,” County Executive Gordon said. “Attendees can stroll through the historic gardens of Rockwood Park and tour the Rockwood Museum for free beginning at 3 o’clock.”

The Rockwood Museum collection includes nearly 300 clothing and accessory items from the Victorian era and the early twentieth century. The 1920s marked the beginning of a new era in fashion, as women abandoned the more restrictive attire of prior years, choosing more comfortable – yet daring – apparel. Vintage pieces from this period are incorporated into museum exhibits.

“We are so fortunate that the Bringhurst family members were excellent archivists and saved everything from shoes and hats, to letters and furniture,” said Philip Nord, Rockwood Museum Director.

Rockwood Mansion was built in 1851 and is an excellent example of Rural Gothic architecture. Museum exhibits depict the life of the wealthy Bringhurst family during the turn of the twentieth century. The surrounding 72 acres includes a formal historic garden and paved trails, which link to the Northern Delaware Greenway.
