WILMINGTON, Del. – New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon joined clergy, a myriad of public officials, city residents, and others to present a unified voice against ABC Television’s decision to base the show “Murder Town” in Wilmington, Delaware.
“I was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. This city means a lot to me,” County Executive Gordon said. “Wilmington has had some challenges of late. But, we are all working together in Delaware to bring the city back to its heyday, and we don’t need this kind of negative exposure.
“I agree wholeheartedly with the letter sent by Wilmington City Council to ABC Television and A+E Networks asking them to reconsider their ‘reported decision’ to use Wilmington as the setting for the new show, ‘Murder Town.’”
The letter from Wilmington City Council states, in part, “Cities with larger physical footprints, such as Baltimore with ‘The Wire’ and New York with ‘Law and Order’ are able to withstand a national presentation that directly associates these cities with negative behaviors and actions. Wilmington is a smaller city with no room for error on the reputation scale – either real or perceived.”
County Executive Gordon said Wilmington was poised for a return to greatness with the proposed Port of Wilmington expansion proposal, the building of the Wilmington Stock Exchange, and other important, economic development initiatives.
Acting Chief Administrative Officer Samuel L. Guy, Esq., a resident of the City of Wilmington, joined the County Executive in the organized protest.
