County Executive Thomas P. Gordon and Councilman David L. Tackett invite residents and guests to the third annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, 5-8 p.m. this Friday at Glasgow Park.

While the forecast calls for balmy weather without a hint of snow, Gordon called the free holiday event “a great opportunity to bring the family to one of our most popular parks.”

Parents are encouraged to bring cameras to take pictures of children’s visits with Santa, who arrives at 5 p.m. aboard a Christiana Fire Company fire truck that will stay on display.

Tackett, whose district includes the park, said the event is growing “bigger and better…. You will not be disappointed.” This will be the first chance to see the park’s newly renovated historic barn and farm house. The historic structures “look amazing,” Tackett said. “Perfect for this event.”

The Caboose Day Care Choir and Eastpoint Church band and choir will perform before Gordon leads the tree ceremony at 6 p.m. Later, guests can enjoy hayrides, bonfires and refreshments.

The county police department’s popular horse patrol carriage also will be on display. Other entertainers include Mount Pleasant High School Quintet, Appoquinimink High School Brass Ensemble and Red Lion Christian Academy Choir. Hagley Museum staff will lead a free make-and-take children’s craft. Shuttle service will be provided from parking to the program area.

Although admission is free, donations of canned goods will be collected for the Food Bank of Delaware to distribute to the needy. The park – with its entrance off westbound U.S. 40 before Del. 896 -- may be found by GPS at 2275 Pulaski Highway, Newark, DE 19702.
