[ARCHIVED] Grant to help New Castle County families stay in their homes

In good news for the holidays, New Castle County’s Department of Community Services announces a $300,000 grant from the Delaware State Housing Authority that will provide crucial repairs – from roof work to plumbing replacement -- that will let 38 homeowners and their families keep living in their homes.

The grant from the authority’s Housing Development Fund, which helps provide affordable and safe housing, will assist 38 households in the Garfield Park and Overview Gardens communities along the Route 9 Corridor.

The initiative is part of the county’s ongoing efforts in that area, in partnership with the state, including the transformational Route 9 Innovation Center, now under construction. With funding early this year through the Strong Neighborhood Housing Program, the county also was able to buy vacant and blighted homes in Garfield Park and Overview Gardens for renovation and sale to eligible homebuyers.

Thanking the housing authority for its help stabilizing the area, County Executive Thomas P. Gordon said the significant state funding “will help established residents stay in these neighborhoods, reducing vacancy and related issues that affect the quality of life.”
