S/Lt. Michael R. Nichols, NRP was appointed to the New Castle County Emergency Medical Service as an Emergency Medical Technician in 1995. He attended the Medical Center of Delaware Paramedic Training Program and achieved certification as a Nationally Registered Paramedic in 1996. S/Lt. Nichols was promoted to the rank of Paramedic Corporal in May 2004, Paramedic Sergeant in July 2013, Lieutenant in May 2015, and to his current rank of Senior Lieutenant in May 2020.
S/Lt. Nichols is a CPR instructor and has participated in the EMS Division community CPR training program. He has also served as an Assistant Recruiter for the New Castle County Paramedics. In 1999 he was selected as one of the first paramedics to be assigned to the New Castle County Police SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team, where he served as the non-commissioned officer in charge. He continued to serve as the medical team leader for the New Castle County EMS tactical paramedics until 2016.
S/Lt. Nichols has received several official commendations including a Distinguished Unit Citation for his actions at an apartment fire in June 2004, a Distinguished Unit Citation for his performance in a SWAT hostage rescue at the Delaware Correctional Center in August 2005, and a Pre-hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest Save Citation in 2013.
S/Lt. Nichols is a graduate of the West Point Command and Leadership Academy sponsored by the New Jersey Association of Chiefs of Police, and is currently assigned to the Office of Support Services, Administration/Special Operations Branch in the Emergency Medical Services Division.
